Unmissable natural pools and waterfalls in NSW

18 Oct, 2025

Forget the spa for a wholesome day of healing and head outdoors instead. Often paired with some of the best hikes in NSW, this list of natural swimming spots and waterfalls will have you excited to get out and explore what’s beyond city lines.

From rainforest cascades to ocean plunge pools, we’ve uncovered the very best Mother Nature has to offer to calm a busy mind. So, grab a towel, lace up your boots, and follow the trail to a kind of rejuvenation only she can provide – no appointment needed.

Yarrangobilly Caves Thermal Pool

One might think that Kosciuszko National Park is too cold to go swimming but that’s the exact appeal of the Yarrangobilly Caves Thermal Pool. Tucked amongst the mountains, this natural heated spring sits at a comfortable 27ºC which makes it perfect for a dip at any time of year and will melt away the cold, and your worries.

It’s easily accessible from the car park with a 700m walk but given the beauty of the area, we recommend exploring with one of the many walks through the limestone caves.

Stay: While there are a number of places to stay in the Snowy Mountains, you can’t go past the beautiful river-front cottages at Nimbo Fork Lodge.

Figure 8 Pools

Iconic and for good reason, these rock pools are easily one of the most popular swimming spots near Sydney, located just one hour south in the Royal National Park.

Accessible by either a 6km or 12km hike, be sure to check the tides beforehand as the pools will only be revealed and safe to visit at low tide. Once you’ve made it to the beach and done a bit of rock hopping, you’ll find the natural figure 8 plunge pool amongst a collection of other rock pools to dip in. As it’s fed by the ocean, summer is the best time to visit (unless you want nature’s ice bath!)

Nearby: Take the opportunity to turn this visit into a wellness reset with a stay at the nearby Heart & Soul Retreats. Offering yoga, meditation, workshops and delicious plant-based meals all overlooking the ocean, you’d be excused for taking the opportunity to stop past while you’re in the area.

Nellies Glen

Few things revive the soul quite like the cool rush of a waterfall washing over you and that’s exactly what this hidden gem provides. Popular only with those in the know, Nellies Glen is located in the gorgeous Southern Highlands region, and surrounded by a number of just as impressive falls for you to explore during your travels.

While it might be chilly, winter is a great time to visit with the rain providing some extra oomph to the waterfall.

Nearby: Fuel up before your expedition at the nearby Moonacres Kitchen where you’ll find a hearty selection of soups, toasties and pastries all made with seasonal produce - most of which is grown at their nearby farm!

Crystal Shower Falls

The best way to describe this beauty in the Dorrigo National Park is “a place where fairies would live”. Lush, green and with an air of magic, Crystal Shower Falls is easily accessible and allows you to see the waterfall from all angles, with a boardwalk running directly behind the stream of water.

Like the others, Crystal Showers is at its best after some rainfall and as you can’t swim at this one, the water temperature doesn’t come into play. For the full experience, take on the Wonga Walk - a 6.6km loop through the rainforest which passes multiple waterfalls along the way.

Stay: If one day in the area isn’t enough (and trust us, it probably isn’t), book a night or two in a tiny home or glamping tent at Levenvale Farm. The 500-acre property is completely off-grid and the perfect accompaniment for a wholesome weekend away in nature.

Wentworth Falls and The Grand Clifftop walk

This 19-kilometre, two-day trek in the Blue Mountains starts at Wentworth Falls and ends at Katoomba, and along the way you’ll see stunning views, marvel at iconic waterfalls, and have the opportunity to explore local villages and Aboriginal culture.

And the best bit? You don’t have to hike the whole thing to reap the benefits. There are pools and waterfalls that are easily accessible from picnic spots and lookouts at Wentworth Falls, Leura and Gordon Falls.

Nearby: Stock your backpack before you leave at one of the many local farmers markets. The Blackhealth Growers Market is held on the 2nd Sunday of every month and you can pick up some locally grown fruits, veggies and sourdough to take with you on your adventure.

Minyon Falls

Arguably one of the best waterfalls in NSW, Minyon Falls is a popular day trip for visitors to Byron Bay. The impressive 100m cascade can be viewed from either the top or the bottom with the full 13km hike to the pool below taking around 3-4 hours.

The area is well-known for its rich history and cultural significance, so for those looking to deepen their understanding, guided tours are available with Vision Walk Eco Tours and will help you uncover the secrets of the region and spot some pretty special wildlife.

Nearby: Hiked all day? Soothe your weary legs with a soak and massage at The Banya — a dreamy 1920s-inspired bathhouse blending Euro charm with modern wellness.
