Your go-to guide for wellness in Byron Bay

03 Feb, 2025

Byron Bay has been a wellness haven long before ‘wellness’ became a buzzword.

Nestled along the stunning stretch of Australia’s eastern coastline, this iconic destination weaves relaxation, rejuvenation and mindful living into the very fabric of its culture. A siren call for free spirits, health enthusiasts and seekers of tranquility, Byron invites everyone to slow down, reconnect with nature and embrace a lifestyle centred on wellbeing.

Wellness top picks

When it comes to wellness activities, Byron offers a smorgasbord of options. Spend the morning with Black Dog Surf School learning to ride some of Australia’s most iconic waves. For an immersive experience, paddle out with Cape Byron Kayak to spot bottlenose dolphins and turtles and, during the right season, migrating whales. Prefer to stay on dry land? The Cape Byron Lighthouse Track is a must. An awe-inspiring coastal walk.

Better yet, ride along Byron’s beaches or hinterland trails with Zephyr Horses. Galloping along the shore or trekking through verdant landscapes is an unforgettable way to experience the region. For a connection to land experience, Explore Byron Bay offers tailored nature tours and workshops, guiding you through the region’s hidden gems while providing insights into its rich environment and indigenous heritage.

For a tranquil wellness experience, the Crystal Castle in Mullumbimby never disappoints. Home to some of the world’s largest crystals, this serene sanctuary is perfect for wandering through lush gardens, enjoying crystal sound healing sessions and meditating in the enchanted geode cave.

While in Mullum, make sure you stop by The Banya for a bathhouse session. After luxuriating in their woodfired sauna and hot and cold mineral plunge pools, don’t forget to grab a bite to eat – the phenomenal kitchen team can turn even a simple green salad into something extraordinary.

Natural wellness

While it’s a little outside the town, a trip to Nightcap National Park is essential. Part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia, this lush sanctuary offers stunning waterfalls, ancient trees and tranquil walking tracks.

Vision Walks Eco-Tours will pick you up from your Byron accommodation and an environmental scientist will guide you along the Minyon Falls Walk. The breathtaking trail winds through dense rainforest to the base of the falls, where you can cool off with a refreshing dip.

Another highlight is the Northern Rivers Rail Trail, a scenic and easily accessible 24km stretch between Murwillumbah and Crabbes Creek. Rent an eBike from Better by Bike at heritage listed Murwillumbah Railway Station and spend the day cruising through lush, green landscapes and stopping to savour local delights in picturesque villages. If you’ve got kids in tow, attach a tag-along chariot, baby seat, or shotgun seat for a family adventure without the worry of little legs tiring out.

Rise Up Conscious Tours also offer a Hinterland Magic and Glow-worm experience that includes a guided hike, organic meal and a visit to a secret cave.

Nourishing eats

On the food front, Byron’s wellness eats are as impressive as its landscapes. Local hotspot Bayleaf Café, with its seasonal menu of fresh, local ingredients, is a breakfast institution. For acai bowls or smoothies, head to Combi, while Folk – tucked away on a quiet corner outside the main strip – is perfect for plant-based delights in a peaceful setting.

If you’re after baked goods, Sunday Sustainable Bakery has phenomenal offerings (they bake a lot with spelt flour which I love), and their fuss-free yet flavourful brekky and lunch menus are perfect for a quick bite.

For farm-to-table dining, Three Blue Ducks at The Farm is a must-visit. Located on a working farm on the outskirts of town, its rustic charm, commitment to sustainability and the allure of pigs, cows and chickens make it a standout. Karkalla, another local gem, celebrates native Australian ingredients with culinary experiences that are both unique and deeply connected to the land, perfectly complementing Byron’s diverse food scene.

You can also pick up local produce every Thursday from the weekly Byron Farmers Market – one of the longest running farmer’s markets in the country. And if you're visiting on the first Sunday of the month, don't miss the Byron Bay markets. With a vibrant mix of local artisans, fresh produce, live music and delicious food stalls, the markets are a true celebration of Byron’s creative spirit.

Where to stay

This region is brimming with beautiful accommodations – from boutique beachside retreats to eco-friendly hinterland havens.

A firm Well Traveller favourite is the award-winning eco-retreat Elements of Byron, where you’ll find your own private villa nestled between the vast stretch of Belongil Beach and lush rainforest. Start your day here with complimentary sunrise yoga, hop on the Byron Solar Train to explore the town, enjoy guided walks through 20 acres of native rainforest and wetlands, or unwind with a treatment at the tranquil Osprey Spa.

For a retreat further from the hustle and bustle, Gaia Retreat and Spa is burrowed in the Byron hinterland. This award-winning wellness sanctuary offers a luxurious, personalised experience with daily yoga, spa treatments, organic cuisine and peaceful surroundings.

Seeking a more laid-back, budget-friendly option? Byron Bay Discovery Park is ideal. This family-friendly, eco-conscious park offers a range of accommodations, from cosy cabins to spacious campsites, all walking distance from the main strip.

Getting to Byron

The ideal road trip stop if you’re travelling between Sydney and Brisbane, you can also get to Byron via Ballina or Gold Coast airport. I've driven the M1 stretch between the Gold Coast and Byron Bay more times than I can count. If you're looking for the true pulse of Australia's wellness movement, this coastal sanctuary is simply unmissable.

To truly experience everything the region has to offer, plan to stay at least 3–4 days – though longer stays will give Byron time to reveal even more of its magic and allow you to explore the incredible surrounding Northern NSW towns.
