Your wellness guide to The Tweed
Some places feel like an instant balm for your nervous system, and The Tweed is undoubtedly one of them for me. Tucked between ancient rainforests and sun-kissed beaches, this pocket of paradise in Northern New South Wales feels purpose-built for unwinding. Just a short hop from the Queensland border – and my home on the Gold Coast – I’ve watched The Tweed evolve from a sleepy retirement enclave to a thriving mecca of wellness. It’s always had jaw-dropping natural beauty and a laidback creative spirit, but now it seamlessly blends that charm with a touch of luxury.
From boutique wellness retreats to vibrant farm-to-table dining, The Tweed has blossomed into a destination where you can nourish your body, ignite your creativity and recharge your soul. It’s a region that hasn’t lost its small-town heart but now boasts world-class experiences – whether it’s hiking through lush rainforests, paddling alongside turtles in sparkling waters, or enjoying a meal crafted from ingredients grown just metres away. For me, it’s the ultimate escape – a place close to home yet delightfully worlds apart.

Natural wellness

Hiking in New South Wales never disappoints, and The Tweed is home to some standout trails that showcase its breathtaking natural beauty. Start your journey at the World Heritage-listed Border Ranges National Park, near Murwillumbah. This rewarding hike leads to a lookout offering panoramic views over lush rainforests, Wollumbin (Mount Warning) and the dramatic crater escarpment.
For a different way to explore The Tweed, the Northern Rivers Rail Trail offers a unique adventure. Starting in Murwillumbah and spanning 24 kilometres to Crabbes Creek, this multi-use trail repurposes an old railway line, weaving through rolling farmland, historic tunnels and charming villages. Whether walking or cycling (an eBike is a great option if you want to cover the entire trail in a day), the journey is immersive and leisurely. Nourishing eats

My favourite thing about The Tweed? Hands down, it’s the food. This region is a foodie’s paradise, bursting with cafes, restaurants, and markets that champion local produce and sustainability. You could spend weeks eating your way through its incredible offerings and still not uncover all the hidden gems.
Start your culinary journey at Tropical Fruit World in Duranbah. This is a must for kids and adults alike, where a guided tour takes you through the secrets of sustainable farming. The café’s exotic fruit tastings are a burst of flavour and a perfect introduction to The Tweed’s bounty. Think juicy dragon fruit, creamy custard apples and tangy finger limes.
For another wholesome farm experience, head to Farm & Co. Famous for its golden sunflower fields, this picturesque spot is a photographer’s dream. Wander through the blooms, crack macadamias fresh from the tree, or lose yourself in the charming maze. The on-site restaurant serves up fresh, locally sourced meals that are as nourishing as they are mouth-watering.
For something a little more curated, book a feast with a native twist. Tweed Escapes host a leisurely lunch aboard a boat on the Tweed River and the menu is filled with Indigenous flavours, creating an unforgettable experience. And if fine dining is more your vibe, Tweed River House in Murwillumbah is an absolute standout. This magnificently restored century-old estate oozes charm and sophistication. Enjoy your meal on the veranda overlooking the river – it’s a dining experience you’ll never forget.
For a more contemporary twist, Pipit Restaurant in Pottsville is a must. The open kitchen invites you to watch the magic happen, as every dish beautifully balances sustainability with local flavours. Relaxed yet refined, Pipit is the kind of place that lingers in your memory – and your taste buds – long after you leave.
