Your wellness guide to the NSW Southern Highlands
You know that feeling when the city starts to disappear in the rear-view mirror? The air smells fresher, the trees stand taller, and your shoulders begin to soften – almost involuntarily. That’s the Southern Highlands.
I arrived on one of those weekends where I didn’t realise how much I needed a break until I was already breathing easier. I wasn’t after anything too far – just somewhere green, quiet and a little bit magic. A place to slow down, breathe deeper, and (let’s be honest) eat something nourishing that I didn’t have to cook myself. Is that too much to ask? Not in the Southern Highlands.
Only an hour and a half’s drive from Sydney, yet somehow an entire world away, the Highlands has this grounding, soul-soothing energy that you feel the second you arrive. Rolling hills. Storybook villages. Tree-lined paths that hush your mind. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to pack up your city life entirely and embrace your country gal era.
If you’re looking for a wellness retreat not far out of Sydney, a luxury or farm stay in NSW, you can’t go past the Southern Highlands. Whether you’re craving stillness, nourishment, creativity or connection, this region delivers in spades.
Natural wellness
The Highlands is a natural wellness playground, home to some of the best waterfalls in NSW. Start with Belmore Falls – a showstopper of a waterfall with dramatic drops, misty air and birdsong echoing off sandstone cliffs. For a quieter kind of beauty, Bangadilly National Park offers peaceful trails through native bushland, while Budderoo National Park hides ancient rock formations, lush valleys and stunning waterfalls that invite slow wandering and quiet awe.
Prefer your nature served gently? Corbett Gardens in Bowral is a fragrant, flower-filled escape – stunning year-round, but never more so than during Tulip Time, when over 75,000 tulips burst into bloom beneath the spring sun. The whole town comes alive with floral displays, garden tours and community events – it’s a joyful celebration of the season, and the kind of sensory experience that feels surprisingly grounding.
Or head to Southern Highlands Flower Farm, where you can walk through rows of dahlias, breathe in the crisp country air and even pick your own blooms – every moment here feels like a reset. For something a little more adventurous, Canyonleigh Trails offers gentle trail rides through open farmland and bush – a slow, rhythmic way to reconnect with the land, one hoofbeat at a time

Food tastes different in the Highlands – fresher, fuller, somehow more alive. Maybe it’s the cool-climate soil, maybe it’s the care behind every ingredient. Either way, this region is a haven for slow food lovers, paddock-to-plate advocates and anyone who believes wellness begins on the plate.
We love Moonacres, where nourishment goes beyond what’s served. Yes, the café’s seasonal, paddock-to-plate menus are a drawcard – but their hands-on cooking classes are where the magic deepens.
