Private Lei Poʻo Making Workshop

O'ahu, Hawai'i, USA

If you’re heading to Oʻahu in Hawai‘i and looking for an activity that blends creativity, culture, and mindfulness, we love the Private Lei Poʻo Making Workshop, led by Honolulu-based lei maker and educator Dillyn.

This 3-hour experience is an intimate, hands-on introduction to the art of lei making, focusing on the traditional wili method, where materials are carefully wound around a base to create a beautiful floral lei that is worn on the head (Lei Po‘o).

A curated selection of seasonal, locally sourced flowers and foliage is provided at the Pua (flower) Bar, along with all necessary tools to create your very own handcrafted lei – a mindful, cultural practice that encourages focus and calm.

We love that cultural insights, ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian language), and lei traditions are also woven throughout the workshop, leaving participants inspired and connected to place.

Inclusions

  • All lei making materials – raffia, scissors, spray bottles, etc.
  • A variety of seasonal, locally sourced and curated flowers and foliage beautifully displayed in lau hala baskets.
  • Expert instruction that includes a glimpse into the cultural significance of lei making.
  • Hawaiian language vocabulary, and personalised tips.
  • Learn about lei making as a reciprocal practice, and native Hawaiian plant conservation.

Making a difference

  • PALAI workshops use local and sustainably sourced materials whenever possible to support the local economy, farmers, and growers.
  • When gathering materials for their workshops they practice ‘ohi pono – gathering in ways that aren’t harmful and allow for regenerative growth.
  • The team offers annual give-back workshops for the Native Hawaiian community and keiki (children) through partnering with local non-profits.
  • They also cultivate a native lei garden to supply their workshops and contribute to native plant conservation.
