Billabong – your next Sydney wellness retreat

01 Dec, 2025

Sometimes, all it takes is 45 minutes in the right direction to feel restored. A hidden gem on the outskirts of Sydney, overlooking an expansive, tree-fringed billabong, Billabong Retreat is a wellness retreat that offers a kind of exhale that arrives before you even check-in.

Owner Paul von Bergen poured a lifetime of love into this retreat, building it from the ground up more than a decade ago with a vision for deep, conscious rest. Every decision, from the sustainable design of the cabins to the natural materials and low-tox finishes, reflects that intention.

As you pull into this soul-soothing sanctuary, the hum of the city slips off your shoulders slowly – and what’s left is space. As gum trees replace traffic lights and the air thins out, you find yourself wondering how something this peaceful could have been right under your nose all along.

Here, it’s not just the quiet that strikes you, it’s the layered symphony of nature. Kookaburras laugh from high branches. Little blue wrens flit between the decks. Wallabies graze quietly outside your cabin while turtles drift lazily in the billabong below. They even leave you a wildlife guide in your room, inviting you to tune in to what’s around you. And you do – almost instinctively. The sights and sounds are so immersive, so alive, it’s like stepping into another world. One where you feel cradled by nature and utterly removed from the hustle you left behind.

The magic of Billabong Retreat lies in thoughtful simplicity – eco-luxe cabins and cosy cottages tucked among towering gums, soft birdsong carried on the breeze, and a gentle rhythm that invites you to drop into something slower. You’re welcomed with warmth, not fanfare. Then shown to your accommodation – we love the timber-clad, balcony-fringed cabins bedecked with an outdoor bathtub for starlit soaks. It’s eco-conscious comfort at its best. There are even shared accommodation options for a lower cost experience - but still with all the amazing activities. And your schedule? A guide, not a rulebook. Do it all, do a little, or do nothing at all.

Each retreat offering centres on a theme, but nothing feels rigid or overly structured. The experienced facilitators – yoga teachers, counsellors, meditation guides – weave knowledge and compassion into each session. You might join a yoga retreat, learn about breathwork, how to reduce stress, seasonal eating or the power of presence (tip - the Meditation retreat is amazing). But the learning never feels heavy. It lands gently. Seeds are planted. And more often than not, the biggest revelations come in the in-between moments – walking the bush trails, chatting over dahl, lying on the massage table with the wind rustling through the trees.

There’s open-air yoga overlooking the billabong – leafy, peaceful and gently guided – but absolutely no pressure to attend. That said, if the sun’s out, the sunrise class is hard to beat: birdsong on stereo, trees swaying, and you, stretching under a soft, golden sky.

Guided meditations are on offer, as are mindfulness workshops, journalling sessions and nature walks. But if all you want is to sit by the fire with a cup of tea, or swing in a hammock and stare at the sky, you’re doing it right. There’s a quiet respect here for whatever it is you came for – stillness, clarity, healing, time out, or simply a break from your phone and your thoughts.

Meals are served in the main lodge and are the kind of whole-food feasts that make you feel cared for. Warm curries, vibrant salads, earthy broths and raw treats that leave you feeling nourished.

Every dish is vegetarian, mostly gluten- and dairy-free and made with heart. You share tables with fellow retreat-goers – solo travellers, best friends, burnt-out professionals and regulars who return at the same time each year – all drawn here by the same quiet pull to pause and reconnect.

There’s a spa on site too, and truly, it might just be one of the most relaxing day spas in NSW. In this cosy treatment space, you can book the usual suspects like massages and facials, alongside natural therapies like reiki, Neuro Emotional Technique (NET) and iridology, plus private meditation and yoga classes.

But honestly, just being here is medicine. Waking to the sound of kookaburras. Watching the sun move across the water. Letting your shoulders drop without realising they’d been up by your ears for months. Billabong Retreat is one of those rare places that helps you remember who you are when everything else falls away.

If an overnight stay isn't possible, day visits provide full access to the retreat amenities, such as the magnesium pool and lounges. The experience includes a morning workshop, an afternoon yoga class, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and the option to enjoy a spa or wellness treatment. Come alone, come with a friend, come for the yoga or come for the day spa.

Whatever your reason and however long you can stay, you’ll leave with a little more clarity, a little more softness and the kind of stillness that stays with you – even when the traffic finds you again.
