A guide to wellness in Mudgee

13 Nov, 2025

Mudgee, tucked away in the central west of NSW, is the kind of place that invites you to exhale the moment you arrive. Framed by rolling vineyards, heritage streetscapes and those impossibly wide country skies, it’s a town that knows how to do slow living well.

Sure, it’s long been famous for its award-winning wines and warm country hospitality, but there’s another side to Mudgee quietly drawing in wellness seekers. From paddock-to-plate dining and wellness retreats to creative workshops and scenic trails, Mudgee is packed with ways to nourish your mind, body and soul – and trust me, you’ll leave feeling better than when you arrived.

Wellness top picks

Looking for a deeply restorative experience? Head to Jila Wellness at The Clairfield Hotel. Time in one of their float tanks or infrared saunas is designed to help you unwind from the inside out, and the saunas have the added benefit of Chromotherapy – a colour and light therapy that will help balance your body and boost your mood.

One of the best ways to get your body moving is with an infrared-heated Pilates or Yoga class at Sense of Solis. You might choose a full body flow that’s all about strength, control, and feeling empowered; or a hot yoga class that offers space to move, breathe, and grow. If you’d rather have an invigorating (and much more chilly!) experience, plunge into the ice bath. Or, to soothe the nervous system, they also offer a calming sound bath with crystal bowls, ocean drum, and rain sticks.

Or if a full wellness retreat is what you’re craving, Budgalong Lodge in Spicers Creek delivers. Nestled on a working farm just outside Mudgee, they offer seasonal retreats that blend yoga, breathwork, nourishing meals and mindfulness practices, all designed to ground and reset. You’ll arrive feeling frazzled and leave wondering why you don’t do this more often.

Natural wellness

Of course, no visit to Mudgee is complete without taking in its natural beauty.

Start your stay off with a dose of nature and a little adventure by paddling the glassy waters of Gungaddy Swamp with the crew from Southern Cross Kayaking. There’s something meditative about the gentle rhythm of the paddle and the stillness of the water, with nothing but open sky and bushland around you. It’s the kind of experience that forces you to slow down, breathe a little deeper and really be in the moment.

Lawson’s Park is another local gem – a riverside haven made for morning strolls or quiet moments of reflection. Up for a bit more adventure? Wollemi National Park is just a short drive away and well worth the trip. With its towering cliffs, deep gorges and ancient bushland, it’s the kind of place that reminds you just how good it feels to get lost in nature. Whether you’re hiking through the forest or simply sitting and soaking up the views, it’s pure soul food.

If you love a good story, don’t miss Mudgee Heritage Walking Tours. Led by passionate locals, these tours bring the town’s rich colonial history to life. You’ll wander charming laneways and grand old buildings, learning about the characters and moments that shaped Mudgee into what it is today. It’s a lovely way to stretch your legs and see the town through local eyes.

Prefer to explore the region on two wheels? Ezyride eBikes have you covered. Grab an e-bike and cruise through the region’s country lanes, rolling vineyards and scenic lookouts – it’s an ideal way to explore without breaking a sweat. You’ll find yourself smiling as you roll past cellar doors and historic buildings, the fresh country air filling your lungs.

Nourishing eats

Foodies, you’re in for a treat. Mudgee’s local produce scene is bursting with flavour – and heart.

For an unforgettable taste of Aboriginal culture and cuisine, the Warakirri Dining Experience at Indigiearth is truly one-of-a-kind. Over four immersive hours, you’ll savour native Australian foods and beverages while enjoying cultural storytelling, music and authentic entertainment. Led by proud Ngemba Weilwan woman and Indigiearth founder Sharon Winsor, this experience offers so much more than a meal – it’s a deep connection to Country, culture and the rich history of Australia’s First Peoples.

For nourishing dining experiences, you can’t go past The Zin House. Set among the vines at Lowe Family Wines, this is a paddock-to-plate experience that truly celebrates the region’s bounty. Seasonal menus, garden-fresh produce and sweeping views make this a must-do meal.

Mudgee is well known for its rich agricultural land, wineries, and local produce and each season brings the chance to get up close and personal with local farmers. Spring marks the beginning of the cherry season with many local farms offering the chance to pick your own bag of these little jewels (tip - October and November is when the trees are full of ripe, juicy fruit). During Summer there’s an abundance of delicious stone fruit and berries; and Autumn is all about apples. Oh, and did we mention the Winter truffles? Join a truffle hunting experience, where specially trained dogs lead you through the forest to find these gourmet fungi.

If you’re lucky enough to be in town on the third Saturday of the month, Mudgee Farmers’ Markets are a local institution. Wander the stalls, coffee in hand and chat to the growers and makers while you stock up on organic veggies, artisan breads, local honey and more.

Where to stay

When it comes to places to rest your head, Mudgee delivers on charm, comfort and a serious side of style.

If off-grid luxury is your vibe, Glenayr Farm delivers in spades. Set on 320 acres of rolling hills, you can choose between a glamping tent or a beautifully appointed villa. Either way, it’s the kind of place that invites you to slow down and simply be.

If you’re dreaming of luxury with a wilderness twist, Sierra Escape is your spot – eco-friendly glamping tents, outdoor bathtubs and sweeping views of the valley that you’ll never get tired of. You can add on a massage or private yoga class if you’re looking for a little more R&R during your stay.

Prefer to stay in town? The Clairfield Hotel oozes heritage charm with beautifully styled rooms right in the heart of Mudgee. It’s ideal if you love wandering to a nearby café or boutique.

Getting there

Mudgee is an easy 3.5-hour drive from Sydney, winding through scenic countryside that sets the tone for a relaxing escape. If you’d rather skip the drive, regional flights run regularly from Sydney to either Orange or Dubbo – though you’ll still need to factor in about an hour and a half on the road to reach Mudgee from there.

Once you arrive, hiring a car — or even an e-bike – is the best way to explore the region’s charming villages, rolling country roads and hidden wellness spots at your own pace.
