Yes, you can do Pilates on water (and it’s phenomenal)
You never forget your first time on the board. The sun glinting off the water. The world softening to the rhythm of your breath. That wobbly thrill as your muscles fire up to hold you steady – and then, that surprising moment of stillness when everything clicks into place.
That’s the magic of Aqua Sculpt. It’s Pilates, but not as you know it. Yoga, but more fluid. A sound bath that ripples through every cell. And the whole experience unfolds on the water. There’s a reason it’s being hailed the best pilates in Australia. We even featured it on our recent Sydney episode of Well Traveller TV!

Aqua Sculpt started in Sydney’s Rose Bay and has quietly evolved into a global wellness movement, spreading calm and connection through floating fitness, sound healing and water-led restoration across Australia and Southeast Asia. At first glance, it might look like something reserved for the ultra-fit. But actually, Aqua Sculpt is designed for everybody.
The boards are wide and stable, the movement intentionally gentle. Most first-timers are surprised at how natural it feels – like your body instinctively knows how to move with the water, not against it. New to Pilates? Haven’t stretched in a while? Even better. This is one of the most accessible forms of Pilates in Sydney (and the Gold Coast): low-impact, deeply restorative and honestly, a little addictive.

And it’s not just for the usual suspects. There’s even a Floating Stretch for Seniors session held at Bellamy Beach in Sydney – created specifically for older adults or anyone who prefers a slower, more supported pace. The movements are gentle and grounded, performed seated or lying down, making it possible for every body and every age to experience the healing rhythm of the water.
There are two main ways to experience Aqua Sculpt. Floating Fitness is a breath-led blend of Pilates, yoga and mindful mobility, designed to strengthen, lengthen and restore. Yes, you’ll build core strength, flexibility and balance – but you’ll also leave feeling more present in your body than you have in a long time. For a softer, more meditative experience, there’s the Floating Sound Bath. You simply lie back, slip on an eye pillow and let the gentle soundscape wash over you as the water cradles you into a deep state of rest. It’s a nervous system balm – calming, centring and profoundly soothing.

You’ll now find Aqua Sculpt sessions in Sydney, the Gold Coast, Jakarta and (soon) Bali – with more destinations on the horizon. Hot tip - we hear the team is launching in Port Douglas just in time for Summer!
In addition to regular public classes, Aqua Sculpt runs private group sessions that are perfect for birthdays, hens parties, corporate off-sites or just a soul-nourishing day with friends. And for those craving a deeper dive into floating wellness, Aqua Sculpt now offers curated retreats – immersive multi-day experiences where guests can unplug, reconnect and explore the full spectrum of water-based wellness, from movement and sound to stillness and ceremony. These retreats are intimate, joyful and beautifully designed for rest, reset and reconnection.

You’ll also find Aqua Sculpt gently making its way into luxury hotels and resorts, including JW Marriott on the Gold Coast, offering guests the chance to float beneath sunrise skies, move without judgment and feel deeply supported – by the board, the water and the gentle rhythm of the experience. Because at its core, Aqua Sculpt isn’t just about fitness. It’s about mental health, emotional balance and connection – with your body, your breath, and the natural world around you. Are you ready to join their global movement?
