Inside 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay: Hawai’i’s Luxury Wellness Resort on Kaua‘i
Returning to Hanalei Bay in Kaua‘i always feels a little emotional. It’s a place that has been a special part of my life for decades, a place of celebration, reflection and deep connection. So when I arrived at 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay, perched above the soaring cliffs and sweeping curve of the bay with stunning views of the Nāpali Coast, it wasn’t just another luxury hotel stay. It was the chance to experience one of Hawai’i’s most remarkable wellness resorts overlooking a place that has shaped so much of my story.
And yet, despite the luxury of this property, it somehow feels completely grounded in nature.
Everything is timber, local greenery and natural textures. The entire property embraces biophilic design, connecting you with nature and bringing the outdoors into every touchpoint of the experience. It’s sustainable luxury done beautifully – sophisticated without ever feeling cold or overly polished.
Why 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay is one of the best wellness resorts in Hawaii
At 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay, wellness isn’t simply an add-on here, it’s woven into the DNA of the resort.
There’s a daily wellness board in the foyer outlining your choices for the day – from yoga, Pilates and stretch classes to strength sessions and outdoor activities. Wellness here feels incredibly personal and flexible – whether your idea of wellbeing is an intense workout, a quiet meditation or simply sitting by the ocean doing absolutely nothing.
Oh, and the immersive wellness retreats are in a class of their own. There are 4 transformative experiences to choose from, all inspired by the elements: Honua (Earth) for adventure and recovery, Ahi (Fire) for vitality, Wai (Water) for rest and renewal, and Makani (Wind) for a personalised wellness journey.
Plus, the Anatomy gym is state-of-the-art, with every piece of equipment imaginable, alongside a dedicated gorgeous light-filled yoga and movement studio.
And then there’s the Bamford Wellness Spa.

Wellness experiences at Bamford Wellness Spa

I decided to lean fully into the resort’s touchless wellness experiences, beginning with the Somadome meditation pod. Sitting inside the softly enclosed pod with headphones playing calming soundscapes, you completely lose track of time. It was deeply relaxing and made me realise how powerful sound and frequency can be in regulating the nervous system.
Next came a magnesium float experience, where I dreamily floated weightlessly in silence. It’s the kind of relaxation that lingers in your body long afterwards (and all those Epsom salts made for a deeply restful sleep that night!).
I was excited to try the hyperbaric oxygen chamber - a first for me. Spending time inside the chamber breathing concentrated oxygen definitely leaves you feeling energised, clear-headed and noticeably refreshed. Great for shaking off any jetlag.
The spa lounge itself deserves its own love letter. Dimly lit with muted earthy tones, timber finishes and cocoon-like daybeds, it’s the sort of space that instantly slows your heart rate. I found myself lounging there for hours sipping local brewed tea and snacking on dried papaya and nuts between treatments.
A resort designed for restoration

Dining at 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay is as much a part of this property's wellness experience as the spa. The open-air restaurants, including the stunning 1 Kitchen Restaurant, overlook the sweeping curve of Hanalei Bay and the distant Nāpali Coast, with beautifully crafted menus celebrating the freshest local, seasonal ingredients. Under the direction of Culinary Director, Chef Pete Ghione, the dishes showcase Kaua‘i's incredible farmers, growers and fishermen, creating food that is fresh, nourishing and deeply connected to the island. Breakfasts often lingered well into the morning, simply because I never wanted to leave the view.
Although the resort sits dramatically above the coastline, guests can easily access the beach below, where cabanas nestle beside Hanalei Bay. Swimming and snorkelling there became part of my daily ritual. Surrounded by ancient trees, volcanic rocks and the rhythm of the Pacific, there is a palpable sense of mana - the spiritual energy that Hawaiians believe flows through the natural world. It's a place where you can truly feel the age and soul of the landscape around you.

Even my room encouraged stillness. Massive open windows framed the ocean below, and more than once I found myself ordering room service purely so I could stay cocooned in that extraordinary space watching the sunset.
I absolutely loved the 1 Hotel signature bath products (formulated by Bamford Wellness Spa using organic ingredients), and like many places across Kaua‘i, the resort also embraces other thoughtful regenerative practices - there's even a beachfront gym where the weights are made from invasive albizia trees! Guests receive reusable stainless steel water bottles, with refill taps conveniently located throughout the property and even in-room. In the lobby, baskets of fresh local fruit invite guests to help themselves - another simple but beautiful touch.
Exploring Hanalei Bay and Kaua‘i's North Shore

Of course, no stay on Kaua‘i’s north shore is complete without exploring the local area.
I loved spending time in the charming village of Hanalei, wandering its relaxed main street and stopping at the iconic Hanalei Bay Pier and park simply to watch local life unfold. It’s also incredibly special to me personally - it’s where I was married.
From Hanalei, you can continue driving across Kaua‘i’s famous one-lane bridges toward Hā‘ena, where rugged beaches, snorkelling spots and dramatic coastline unfold around every bend (tip - make sure you register for entry to the Hā‘ena State Park in advance).
And then there are the Hawaiian food trucks - one of my favourite parts of Kaua‘i. From fresh fish tacos near Hanalei Pier to casual roadside stops in old Koloa town and Kapaʻa, the food scene feels fresh, local and wonderfully relaxed.
Why Kaua‘i leaves such a lasting impression

What stays with me most about Hawai‘i, though, is the culture.
The Hawaiian language, the traditions, the sense of aloha and the visible care people have for preserving the island’s spirit all leave a lasting impression. Across Kaua‘i, I noticed more operators embracing regenerative tourism principles - protecting marine life, reducing waste, sourcing locally and encouraging visitors to respect and care for the island during their stay.
And perhaps that’s why Kaua‘i feels so different from so many other destinations.
You don’t just visit it.
You feel it.
